Legal Considerations for Airsoft

Airsoft is a lot of fun, but there are some legal considerations to running around with fake guns in the woods. Everyone has heard stories about young people getting arrested or shot because their airsoft rifles were mistaken for the real thing. Make sure to keep yourself safe and protected by knowing the laws.
Use caution as to where you play
Airsoft is illegal to play in most cities and residential areas. Even if it is not illegal in your area, use caution about people seeing you running around in public with a gun. You do not want your neighbors to call the police because they are afraid of you. It is safest to only play on authorized airsoft fields.
Do not try to make your gun look "real"
Problems arise when people paint over or remove the orange markings that show that their guns are not real. The federal government requires a blaze orange stripe on the guns. Many states require a bright orange tip on the barrel of the gun. New York City only allows guns made of brightly colored plastic. While some people feel it takes away from the realism of the game to have the safety markings on the gun, do not break the law and put yourself in danger by covering up these markings.
Research your local laws
Laws vary from state to state and from county to county. Make sure to research the laws in your area before you head out with your airsoft guns.
Airsoft is a great sport, but you need to know the legal problems that you can face while playing it. Keep yourself and your friends safe by knowing the laws that apply to playing airsoft.
